Most log cabins have a very basic floor plan. downstairs was one big room with the fireplace used for cooking. Upstairs were the sleeping quarters.
About the Author To get up to the beds in an old log cabin, you had to climb a ladder on the outside of the house. When two log cabins were joined together to make one, the stairs to go upstairs were put in the space inbetween the two old log cabins that was enclosed to turn the two individual log cabins into one house.
The area between the two log cabins under the stairs became the place where the garbage was buried. As a result it is a good place to find antiques. I also found antiques buried on the hill next to my old log cabin.
I purhased an old (1816) log cabin farmhouse in the Missouri countryside. I am passing along some of what I learned about renovation and the area.
